About this kitchen

This site exists for the cook standing in front of an open refrigerator on a Saturday afternoon, doing math in their head about how much macaroni to make.

What we cook

Soul food is a living Black American culinary tradition — knowledge worked out over generations in home kitchens, where precision came from repetition rather than recipes. Heritage Kitchen centers the cooks, families and gatherings that carried it forward. We write those dishes down carefully: real quantities, real timing, honest notes about what actually matters and what does not.

Every recipe here is written to be cooked, not admired. No twenty-paragraph preamble before the ingredient list. The story, when there is one, sits alongside the cooking instead of blocking it.

Who writes this

Heritage Kitchen is researched and written carefully, not thrown together. Recipes are built from established techniques and real ratios — the way soul food has actually been cooked for generations — then written so they're clear enough to follow the first time, without a twenty-paragraph story standing between you and the ingredient list.

We'd rather be upfront about how something is made than pretend otherwise.

Why calculators

The hardest part of cooking for a crowd is not technique — it is quantity. How many pounds of greens for eighteen people? How many pans of macaroni for a reunion? Our calculators answer those questions with clear assumptions you can see and adjust.

They run entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored, sent anywhere, or attached to an account.

How we handle accuracy

Serving estimates are planning tools, not guarantees. Appetite, menu size and serving style change the numbers. We document our assumptions on every calculator page so you can adjust them for your own table.

Advertising and affiliates

The site is free and supported by advertising and affiliate links. Ad placements are kept out of the middle of ingredient lists and instructions. Affiliate links are marked and never change what we recommend.
